A bronzed white metal sculpture commemorating le Miracle du Cierge (The Miracle of the Candle), whereby the child Bernadette was unharmed by a burning candle that she held too long while kneeling before The Blessed Virgin. The date of this miracle is recorded as April 7, 1851. (Date embossed on a band below the grotto rocks and shown as April 5 on this statue.) The Virgin Mary first appeared to the child Bernadette on February 11, 1858. The Miracle of the Candle happened during the 17th holy apparition to Bernadette, The Holy Mother had previously announced her name, Je Suis l'immaculee' Conception, during the 16th apparition, March 25. Her name appears as a halo made of cut brass letters in this depiction. There is a large highly developed base to the statue which shows views of the present day Lourdes Cathedral which was built in honor of these miracles, plus the Gothic tracery of cathedral windows and other ornate details. The base encloses a quality Swiss movement music box which plays the song "Immaculate Mary". This is a wonderful tribute sculpture done with expert craftsmanship. Weight approx. 6 lbs. Remarkably good condition. C. 1880. French.
