An English sterling silver small hinged powder puff box retaining its original puff. Heart shaped case heavily embossed with C-scrolls on top of lid and on sides, plus 2 roses at the point of the heart. Flat surfaces of top and sides detailed with cross hatching. Flange of top and base crimped in pie crust fashion. Height of box is just over 5/8 inch. About 1-7/8 in. from top to bottom of heart, 1-5/8 in. across. Inside of box is gilded. Overall condition very good with a small amount of bending to the flange edges. The outside bottom is slightly concave, having been perfectly flat originally. Hinge in excellent condition. Struck "D & F" for the firm of Deakin and Francis. Hallmarks show the Anchor for the City of Birmingham, the "X" for the year 1899, and the "Lion Passant", indicating sterling silver. No monogram. Size of this beautiful object might indicate it being intended for a young lady's vanity top.
